I’ve started this audio book not expecting romance or a happily ever after. I’ve been always drawn to this kind of dark and twisted stories and I knew this one would captivate me from the beginning and it will stay with me way long after I’m finished. Sometimes uncomfortable, very disturbing, I had planned to have a break if it was too much but didn’t… I couldn’t get away!
Such a difficult subject to write and already knew that some of us would actually have an hard time reading it, it’s hard to deal with yes, but the author kept it so interesting, I was caught!
I’ve enjoy this very much and I will read everything dark CJ Roberts writes!
Chapters alternate from two different perspectives, we meet Olivia telling the story as first person and Caleb is told in third person and I got to say it works! Caleb’s mind scares, intrigues me and has me feeling different emotions, his behavior, his actions … being inside his head, when growing up or in between, as first person, it would be too much intense!
Caleb had an hard life growing up. Hell he hardly survived it… He grew to be a very dark and twisted person but also beautiful and his good looks saved him from the worst, he made time to learned to be powerful, dominant and his mind is a very dangerous cold place. Through the years, life told him he had no place for love or affection and he can’t seem to deal with anyone who thinks he is worthy or capable of it. All he wants is power and control and an old vengeance commands him. You are drawn by him but in a wrong dangerous way.
Like Olivia was drawn to him, thought he was her hero, her savior, the sweet girl, only eighteen, inexperienced with men, hides with unshaped clothes, fearing all the wrong attention in her nasty neighborhood. She’s been told at a young age not to be a whore or act like one! She is a good girl, loves her mother, helps her family but that doesn’t work both ways, old issues surface from time to time. She’s a survivor, with a strong spirit but has no clue how dark and twisted her life will turn!
Caleb has his mind set, his life has to mean something, quickly learns the trade, gets inside this dark world of human trafficking, teaching pleasure sex slaves to a purpose, an ultimate objective, to help his old friend, the man who saved him from slavery as a young boy, to revenge his wife and family murdered by a powerful, untouchable man, that they promised a slow death. I understand what drives him. Caleb owe him that much.
As it turned out Caleb, apart from kidnapping Livvie at first, doesn’t really wants to harm her… well… he wants her to learn how to survive too. He takes pleasure in her fears, but keeps her safe, he protects her… wrong way of doing it, but what can I say, everyone loves a bad boy a little bit… they both are damage goods and as they spend time “captive” together, they both desperately need and want to be loved!
Not tying to romanticize this story, makes this raw and possible! Conflicts are everywhere, within the characters themselves and of course in me! It feels wrong to find Caleb mysterious sexy but you can ask the author after reading this story, how she did it!
