“Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice”
From the New York Times bestselling author of the Gabriel trilogy comes the anticipated conclusion to The Shadow, a sensual novel set in Florence featuring the dangerously intoxicating coupling of Raven and William…
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I was not that kind of reader, searching for paranormal romance books, that wasn’t me. Although I had some interest in the movies, my faves Dracula, The Crow ( old one) and Interview with a Vampire. After a couple of Anne Rice’s books I didn’t have much to compare. The stories didn’t mean that much to me or anything at all…
Then there was a series written by Sylvain Reynard, the author of Gabriel’s Inferno Series which I liked very much and I’ve started following SR’s writing rather close with admiration. Then I thought, why not?
Amazed of SR’s creation, well-developed characters, this beautifully written dark and sexy underworld tale inviting us to the mysterious city of Florence, enchanting the readers along. My imagination took off. ( I wish I could fly)
The Florentine Series caught my attention as you can read here… and I fell in love in the very first chapter with The Prince. I’ve been a loyal servant ever since. Not compelled or anything 🙂
The Author has an incredible way to transport the readers to the story. You feel it, you are there like an extra character trying to get everyone safe. All the characters belong in the tale and they are in for a reason. Even that extra, me, or you, trying to fight Good against Evil, wishing Love with your Passion would prevail. Every life is worth living.
If you didn’t start reading this series yet, here is the reading order:
The Prince, The Raven, The Shadow and now the release of The Roman.
So back to
Yes, the final installment of the series and yes, why I am so nervous? My stomach started to hurt because I didn’t want it to end. Be quiet my little heart. Oh… it’s alright, right?
Raven and William became my addiction, loving characters, like Gabriel and Julia who make some appearances here and there, still are so close to my heart.
I’ve enjoyed so much to witness their love, unique and transcendent.
Raven a solid and courageous character with a physical condition, if that couldn’t stop her… She’s my hero. How I love her ✨
Even in the darkness she manages to conquer everyone’s heart and fight for the good. She could get out of any dangerous situation just by talking to you. I don’t know what William would do without her… and yet both lost so much…
So now, the most intelligent and interesting character I have ever read, The Prince ⚜️
I’m amazed of his qualities, how noble and how experienced in terms of finding a resolution to problems under pressure.
In love with his city, willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of the humans and all his brethren. For someone who said he had no feelings, his humanity kept his people safe.
Yet, his people were his torment and their sickening quest for power, turn his world apart.
The Roman is full of intense scenes in every chapter. You’ll keep turning the pages and get out of breath, I tell you! Applause to the writer!
Toward the conclusion something really unexpected happens and in my first impression (first read), I wish I had more time in the book to adapt to the new situation. It felt like I lost something and wasn’t ready to give up and then didn’t have time to feel safe around the new and move on.
I’m still processing it…
In the end, I think we don’t welcome changes as changes have to be. Getting out of our comfort zone, means sometimes sacrifice what is dear to us, by the time we change, we then realize it took an effort to leave the past, but it was your best decision to move forward, so we have to try to make it worth.
Had a really good time with the Florentine series. It will be in my case, truly missed.
Will I read paranormal again? I’ll answer with another question :
Can you match Sylvain’s powerful writing?
I recommend this series! You’ll never know a paranormal story like this one! Don’t you miss it!
An intense dark tale, with Intrigue, Art, Love and Redemption.
I couldn’t put it down! I kept slowing my reading, felt a little guilty and got all frustrated. A bittersweet moment as I’m writing this review. I can’t let these enchanting characters go.
My heart hurts…
Sylvain Reynard seduces, does magic to this magnificent conclusion of the Florentine Series. I wonder what’s next! All I know is it’s going to be set in Paris…
I’ve pre-order the audiobook, so I’ll re-read/listen to it again
by the time you are reading this long long review.
I like the audible versions of the books and I’ve been introduced to Sylvain Reynard’s work through John Michael Morgan‘s voice. Unfortunately John is not with us anymore – Hope you are in a better place, you are truly missed *
So The Roman is narrated by another great voice – Robertson Dean

Re-read this time, English version
4,7* Past review:I welcomed the dark and all those stars in the sky, they look very appealing.
I read “The Raven” first and it did me no wrong 🙂 and let me tell you, I’m more curious now. I welcomed the dark and all those stars in the sky, they look very appealing. As well for the Professor. Is it me or Florence makes Gabriel naughtier? Loved all those dark characters and I, now, need to know more about Niccolo, Lorenzo, Ibarra and Aoibhe.
The Prince is a dangerous creature full of angst and shows no mercy, that inner battle worried me then and now, but would he change in the future? Ride on your Triumph and see your old friend. Hope as much as you need! The last battle, the physical one on the roof scared me. I know there is that hint of righteousness in him and I hope the sequel to “The Raven” will make him peace.
How could I forget Sylvain Reynard’s writing style, never! It’s tattooed in me.
This Novella like any other work of art that Sylvain writes was beautifully crafted.
Thank you Sylvain!
Don’t leave us hanging! I need the sequel…

Added my review in the audio version earlier, now Paperback since I won the personalized one in a giveaway (Thank you), so it’s a re-read, though is the same review.
I was transported to Florence.I miss it already and it left me very curious to continue investigating the entire city.I can see myself walking alone at night through those dark alleys, very mysterious places, indeed a magical world and in so many levels.
This story was painted beautifully, with such important details.
The author takes us on a tender and loving journey. I admire the fact that it wasn’t that supernatural intended… that’s the way I saw it. We all feel disabled in some way, at some point of our lives. Behind our everyday mask, we can also be very talented, but appreciated only by who can see us truly.
We learn to see behind the art of the painting, the story in it and how we interpret it. Restoring an old but beautiful piece of art can be hard, risky.
But there’s no other way to do it.
Thank you Sylvain for another wonderfully written and very imaginative story!

I’m listening to the last chapters of The Shadow and I couldn’t
expect anything less than extraordinary from you!Congratulations!
(I already knew it was going to be awesome )
Although I want to read it/listen to it again, it was so good to revisited all the characters. Dead ones and alive ones. Learning a lot about Florence and its dark corners, I have hope in the light and good people.I’m giving it another read, when my paperback comes.
I’ve been listening to my audible version, the last chapters are on loop… so I’ll do a more critical and hoping generous review! (:
My head hasn’t focus yet, I’m still fighting and rolling heads in a little alley in Florence…♥
I recommend The Florentine series, even if it is your first paranormal read, it will look like you are reading a romance thriller suspense mystery art and poetic story.
What are you waiting for? 🙂

Raven and her sister, Cara, are at the mercy of a small detachment of Florentine vampyres, who are delivering them as a peace offering to the feared Curia in Rome.
Though she’s unsure William survived the coup that toppled his principality, Raven is determined to protect her sister at all costs, even if it means challenging Borek, the commander of the detachment.
In an effort to keep Raven from falling into the hands of his enemies, William puts himself at the mercy of the Roman, the dangerous and mysterious vampyre king of Italy. But the Roman is not what he expects …
Alliances and enmities will shift and merge as William struggles to save the woman he loves and his principality, without plunging the vampyre population into a world war.
This stunning conclusion to the Florentine series will take readers across Italy and beyond as the lovers fight to remain together. Forever.
Why not join the #ArgyleEmpire and Professor Gabriel O. Emerson Fanpage fan FB groups? You’ll be the first to know about new work! There are TONS of Gabriel, Florentine and, well, ‘me’ 🙂 related groups, all of which are excellent and highly recommended!
